Should I or Shouldn't I??

So Games Workshop has announced it's new board game, Dreadfleet. Ship combat in the World of Warhammer on the high seas. One thing GW does well (in my opinion) is generate hype. That is until they decided to start keeping a lid on things. But at first glance, this new game certainly does reel me in, and my first instinct is to buy the game. But once again, they take the wind out of my sails by A) Making it 'Whiles Supplies Last', so now I can't plan to get the scratch together over the course of a couple of paydays to buy it, and B) Set the retail price so high, that a working dad of three can't help but become overwhelmed with guilt for spending more than $100 on a board game.

Again, the game looks great and I am a huge fan of their revival of Space Hulk, but will they make the game worth the investment? By that I mean will we see expansions in the future, i.e. a reason to keep playing the game after the initial excitement has fizzled?? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess 'no'. That was the one big disappointment that I had with Space Hulk. No new scenario packs, no new model kits or expansions. I've played the game a bunch of times, but now it becomes the same thing over and over. Hardly worth the $100 price tag.

I'm not sure who's steering the ship over there, but they need to take a long, hard look at their business model, before they lose that loyal customer base.

  1. I would say no, given the criteria you listed. They are the same as mine, but I have the same issues as you, and I am passing.

It sounds like you would consider it more worthwhile if there were forthcoming expansions, but I think they have even come out and said there will not be.

  2. Hey Jeff,

I had the same feelings, and after some discussion decided to pass on Dreadfleet, its an expensive one shot with limited replay value and its $120 shipped, there are plenty of boardgames out there that are surely much better as GW has never been known for its stellar rules. Spartan games has tons of naval style miniature games that will be around for quite awhile at least and are alot cheaper if you get the urge.
Also if you done with Space Hulk, sell it.!
plenty of people are out there who missed the initial release and want to give it a try,
I got $175.00 for my copy on ebay. I'll take an extra $75 plus my initial investment on a game I got play a 1/2 dozen times, no problem.

  3. Maybe if it was a 40K AQUATIC BATTLE. I'm assuming its fantasy warhammer.

I'm in the same boat as you, the same things drove me away but ultimately, it was explaining to my girlfriend the price...

  4. Ask your retailer if you can pay it off over a couple of months? Worked for me less guilt too!

I guess that all depends on what you consider to be your level of investment. I purchased Space Hulk and played it numerous times it's still a great one for when the house is too messy for me to clear a space for a table and too flagged getting kids to bed a mate can bowl round and we can tear into it straight away. I think Dreadfleet will be the same plus I know I will get my money’s worth from the painting.

It all depends on your baseline of "worth" is my Eldar army worth it? I brought it and it sits unassembled (reaver titan included) and judged on the number of times the assembled ones have seen play in 5th edition (6 times for those keeping score at home!) these babies should hit eBay...

But I like the models and me and my mates when we want to have a bit of sci-fi like to roll dice in a friendly atmosphere. we don’t care about the FAQ's or the latest web list we just play.

Sorry I rambled on there a bit old chap but the gist is it doesn’t sound like you really want it so put that money to something else!

One last thing have you played brought Risk? Did it annoy you there were no supplements? ; )
